This is a sweet coffee – one of the sweetest we’ve ever cupped and it’s super creamy. The strawberry note is accompanied by a fruit tea-like finish. With milk (and with the espresso roast) you can expect a more jammy quality to shine through with a hint of dried apricots.

Every now and then a coffee pops up on the cupping table that stops you in your tracks. This is one of them. We’ve definitely cupped lots of excellent natural Burundis over the years, but this one stands out. There’s so much we love about this coffee, not just it’s insane sweetness and strawberry milkshake flavour, but also it’s sustainability credentials.
This coffee is sourced through our friends Raw Material coffee who are 100% committed to sourcing socially and environmentally sustainable coffee. Businde is a washing station owned by Zuberi Matsitsi which supports 650 local farming families. In Burundi (and neighbouring Rwanda), most farmers own parcels of land which only produce small quantities of coffee – not enough to justify building their own facility for processing the cherry. This is where washing stations come in. They work in a similar fashion to cooperatives where each farmer will sell their cherry for processing, milling and exporting.
In the case of Businde farmers are paid 20% above the market rate for their coffee. Businde also have several other sustainability initiatives such as distributing composted coffee pulp as fertiliser and donating seedlings to local farmers.
Aside from doing good, this coffee tastes amazing. The flavour note we keep coming back to is strawberry milkshake.
