This coffee comes from the Guji Zone, a southern Ethiopian region that’s built a global reputation for top-tier speciality coffee. Named after a local Oromo tribe, Guji’s got all the magic: high mountains, rich soil and some of the oldest coffee varieties.

7 smallholder farmers bring ripe cherries to Bette Buna's central mill – known as Megadu Farm.

Bette Buna is a vertically integrated coffee company founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife team Dawit and Hester. Their story starts with family – Dawit’s grandfather farmed coffee for nearly a century and after he passed, Dawit and Hester took over, determined to keep the legacy alive and create more opportunities for coffee communities. At Bette Buna's central mill, the cherries from local farms are processed with care and precision.

But Bette Buna isn’t just about great coffee. They’re a community powerhouse and we could go on forever about what they’re doing at origin. Here’s the short version: They provide agronomy support and run a tree nursery, employing 50 people from the community – many of whom are women and people with disabilities. In rural Ethiopia, full-time jobs like these are rare, so this is a big boost for the local economy.

Their central mill (Megadu Farm) employs 850 seasonal and full-time staff and offers more than just a paycheck. Workers receive a living wage, transport, housing, meals and even satellite education for kids who join their parents during the busy harvest season.
That’s the kind of change maker we're proud to work with!

Ethiopean Guji Natural is my go-to coffee

Ethiopean Guji Natural has been my go-to coffee for a couple of years, it's fruity flavour profile is delicious. I have tried around 14 different Roastworks coffee blends and single origin beans over the years (and still do from time to time) but this Ethiopia Guji Natural always calls me back.

FAQ’S

THINGS PEOPLE ASK US

IS YOUR PACKAGING RECYCLABLE?

Our 200g and 1kg bags are made from recyclable LDPE (plastic #4). Check with your local authority for kerbside collection or recycle at major supermarkets. Our Nespresso-compatible aluminium capsules are also fully recyclable through household recycling or local collection points.

WHAT ROAST LEVELS ARE YOUR COFFEES?

We roast most coffee to an omni profile, which means it suits all brew methods while keeping the unique flavour of each coffee. The exceptions are The Truth, Uprising and The Bold. The Truth and Uprising are roasted for espresso, so they are more developed and soluble. The Bold is roasted darker to bring out richer characteristics alongside the coffee’s flavour.

WHAT GRIND SIZE DO YOU NEED?

Grind size can be tricky as adjusting it helps you get the best extraction. We know not everyone wants to invest in a grinder or fuss with settings. So we’ve simplified options with recommended brew methods:

Filter ground – cafetiere, pour-over filter and long brewed Aeropress
Espresso ground – short brewed Aeropress, moka pot and home espresso machines
