FAQ

Answers to the questions we get asked most often.

WHY DON’T YOU DELIVER OVERSEAS?

Currently, we only deliver to mainland UK.

IS YOUR PACKAGING RECYCLABLE?

Both our 200g and 1kg bags are made from LDPE (plastic number 4), which can be recycled with other soft plastics. Please check whether your local authority or recycling provider collects LDPE products on their kerbside programme before disposing of, otherwise, most supermarkets have designated soft plastic collections where you’ll be able to recycle our bags. Our Nespresso® compatible aluminium capsules are also fully recyclable.

DO YOU OFFER COFFEE SUBSCRIPTIONS?

We do. Select the ‘subscribe & save’ option on the coffee you’d like, and you’ll be prompted to set up and account after checkout. Once you’ve created your account, you can login to edit any up-and-coming orders, or make changes as needed.

CAN I RECYCLE THE ROASTWORKS NESPRESSO® COMPATIBLE ALUMINIUM CAPSULES?

Yes, you can.  You can empty the grounds into your food waste bin or on to your compost heap, then the aluminium capsules can be put in your household recycling. Alternatively, you can use the Podback recycling scheme here and order Podback bags from us, when you buy you capsules with us. We limit the amount of Podback bags you can order to 2, so that our stock doesn’t get depleted quickly by large orders.

WHERE CAN I PURCHASE ROASTWORKS COFFEE?

We sell 4 products (Peru, Ethiopia, Brazil and The Truth) across 250 Waitrose stores across the UK, then a wider range can be bought from Ocado, Amazon, local farm shops near Exeter and the cafes we supply. We’re working on creating a map to pinpoint suppliers, so watch this space!

IS ROASTWORKS COFFEE FAIRTRADE AND ORGANIC?

We aren’t certified and don’t specifically buy Fairtrade or Organic, but that’s not as bad as it may sound. For producers to be certified with either or both attributes take time and money out of their pocket that they won’t necessarily see any benefit from when selling their coffee. While it’s not the case for all, a large majority of the coffee we buy is grown using organic practises, due to it being more cost effective for producers to make their own compost. As for price, we’re working with our producers to ensure that they’re getting a price that covers their living wage and enables their business to be profitable, so we can continue working together in years to come. The topic is far more complicated than this, so we’re working on a blog post to provide our take/experience on navigating it.

WHICH DECAF METHOD DO YOU USE?

Our decaf is processed using the sugarcane decaf process.  This process uses ethyl acetate (EA), a naturally occurring compound derived from molasses (a byproduct of sugar production). The beans are steamed, then soaked in water to draw out the caffeine. Next EA is added and goes to work, binding with the caffeine that’s dissolved into the water. This process is repeated up to 7 times until almost all the caffeine’s gone (less than 0.3% left). The water is then drained off and the caffeine that’s in the water is then dried to be sold on as a raw chemical. Any residual EA is steamed off, leaving you with a decaf that holds on to its flavour.

I CANNOT FIND THE PRODUCT I WANT ON YOUR WEBSITE

We’ve launched our new website. With this, we have taken off a few products (Kenya, Sumatra, Yirgacheffe and The Espresso). Our new range features a wide range of origins with epic flavour profiles to give you choice and familiarity throughout the year. Not only that, but we’ll also be releasing Limited Time Offer (LTOs) coffees throughout the year to showcase some of the world’s finest beans – but when they’re gone, they’re gone!

WHAT ROAST LEVELS ARE YOUR COFFEES?

We roast most of our coffee to an ‘omni’ profile, which basically means the roast level is suitable for all brew methods while still letting the unique flavour of each coffee be prevalent. The only exceptions are The Truth, Uprising and The Bold. The Truth and Uprising are roasted for espresso, which means they’re slightly more developed to make them more soluble for espresso brewing. The Bold is developed further again to allow for some of the richer characteristics of a darker roast to come through, alongside the coffee’s flavour.

WHAT GRIND SIZE DO I NEED?

This is always a tricky one because to get the most out of a coffee, you need to be able to tweak the grind setting to play around with the extraction. However, we understand that it’s not always possible for people to invest in a grinder or simply don’t want to have the hassle of doing so. From there, we’ve tried to simplify our grind options, with a description of brew methods that will (generically) work on that setting.

Whole Beans

Our recommendation for the best tasting cup.

Coarse Grind

Suitable for cafetière, filter methods and long brewed AeroPress (over 2 min brew time)

Medium Grind

Suitable for Moka pots and short brewed AeroPress (under 1 min brew time).

Fine Grind

Suitable for home espresso machines.
